Dear Friends

Everyone is talking about how the holidays snuck up on them this year. We hope you take a breath and stop to enjoy the family, friends and get togethers over the next few weeks.

We give the Parkinson's Fitness team a break from December 20th through January 1st. Please note the upcoming schedule and additional recorded exercise classes we have below.

Thank you all for being a part of the Parkinson's Fitness family. Our goal is to provide free evidence-based fitness programs, support, arts, and more to this community. We appreciate that you are a part of that effort. We hope that you can help us continue this mission with a holiday donation. Please support our work in any way you can. Thank you!

News, Articles, Education & Fun Things

Webinar: Wednesday, January 8, at 1pm: The Many Forms of Carbidopa/Levodopa

Carbidopa/levodopa is the mainstay of treatment for the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and can be very effective in controlling the stiffness and slowness that are so characteristic of PD. But there are many formulations of this medication available, including two new options that were recently approved by the FDA, which can make the choices very confusing.

APDA is here to help you make sense of it all. Join us on January 8 at 1 PM ET as Dr. Eleni Okeanis Vaou, a Movement disorders specialist, discusses the many forms of carbidopa/levodopa and brings clarity to this topic.

Webinar: Wednesday, January 8, at 3pm: Dance and Parkinson’s Disease

Dance has been shown to benefit people with Parkinson’s physically, cognitively and socially. It can increase the sense of enjoyment and provide opportunities for social interaction. Please join Brian Grant Foundation on Wednesday, January 8, 3-4pm as David Leventhal, the director and founding teacher of Dance for PD, guides us through the research backed benefits of dance. Remember to put your dancing shoes on as we will also learn a few new moves. David Leventhal is a founding teacher and Program Director for Dance for PD®, a program of the Mark Morris Dance Group that has now been used as a model for classes in more than 300 communities in 25 countries. Leventhal, who performed with the Mark Morris Dance Group from 1997-2011, leads classes for people with Parkinson’s disease and trains other teachers in the Dance for PD® approach around the world. Click to Register.

Smell Loss & Brain Health: Request Your Smell Test

Smell loss may be one of the most important signals of Parkinson’s risk. Our landmark study is exploring this link toward prevention. Michael J. Fox Foundation is asking everyone age 40 and up without Parkinson’s disease to take a smell test. Help scientists learn more about risk and develop new treatments. A simple scratch-and-sniff test could help scientists learn more about Parkinson’s risk.

Open to everyone age 40 and older in the U.S. or Canada without Parkinson’s disease.

Getting started is easy:

  1. Visit mysmelltest.org.
  2. Answer a few brief questions to receive your scratch-and-sniff test in the mail.
  3. Take the test and enter your answers online.

The test takes about 15 minutes to complete. Your results may mean you are eligible to join a brain health study.
