Dear Friends:

We appreciate the support that has been coming in to help us continue providing the exercise, movement, and strength-building classes, as well as educational and care partner resources that we have offered for over 12 years through Parkinson's Fitness.

We want to continue supporting these free and low-cost services for the rapidly growing Parkinson's community on the North Shore, and ensure that Parkinson's Fitness continues to thrive to meet the demand.

Thank you for helping us fill the financial gap so we can continue the mission of Parkinson's Fitness. Any donation is much appreciated!

Zoom: Wednesday, October 15th at 8pm: Journaling Together

Every third Wednesday of the month Brian Grant Foundation invites you to make writing part of your month! In these one-hour sessions you will have an opportunity to start or continue a writing practice, add writing to your human-ing tool box, and keep your creativity muscles conditioned. In each session, a unique prompt or question will be offered to spark creativity and then you’ll have some writing time in the company of others via Zoom. Participants are welcome to share some of the day’s writing and discuss what they discovered during the exercise, though sharing work is not required. Each session stands alone, so feel free to drop in and see what comes up when you take the expectations out of creative expression. Let’s have fun and do it together! People with Parkinson’s and Care Partners are welcome. Click to Register.

Article: Finding Your PD Specialists

Every person with Parkinson’s deserves access to the right care at the right time. A study suggests that by 2050, 25 million people worldwide will live with Parkinson’s disease — highlighting the urgent need to expand access to doctors trained in Parkinson’s care. Movement disorder specialists (MDS) are neurologists who have received advanced training in Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. They play a vital role in helping people manage symptoms, tailor treatment plans and improve quality of life. However, there are not enough specialists to meet the growing needs of the Parkinson’s community, which can result in longer wait times or increased travel distances for appointments. Click to Read More.

Article: Staying Active Can Slow Cognitive Decline in Parkinson’s

A new study shows that regular physical activity can help slow cognitive decline in people with PD. The findings support the belief that staying active is a key intervention for patients—one that could delay the disease’s progression, alleviate motor symptoms, and improve patients’ quality of life, according to the study, published online Aug. 6 in Neurology®.  Studies also have shown an association between deficits in memory, executive function, and visuospatial abilities in patients with PD and a greater amount of thinning in two parts of the brain, the temporoparietal and superior frontal cortices. Click to Read More.

Recorded Webinar: Rethinking Parkinson's Care: Prevention, Equity and Access to Treatment

Mind Moments®, a podcast from NeurologyLive®, brings you an exclusive interview with Michael Okun, MD. In this episode, Michael Okun, MD, neurologist, author of The Parkinson Plan, discusses the urgent need for global access to levodopa, the gold-standard treatment for Parkinson disease. He outlines the consequences of delayed or unavailable treatment worldwide, including worsening outcomes and unnecessary disability. Okun highlights lessons from global HIV drug distribution that can inform equitable levodopa access, emphasizing the importance of tailoring strategies to local economies and healthcare systems. Additionally, he breaks down key components of The Parkinson Plan, including prevention, research priorities, amplifying patient and caregiver voices, and rethinking care models to better address the world’s fastest growing neurodegenerative disorder. Click to Listen.
